How to Read a COA

How to Read a Certificate of Analysis (COA)

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a third-party laboratory report that verifies a product's identity, potency, and safety. While COAs can appear technical, understanding a few key sections can help you make informed decisions about the supplements you purchase.

1. Product Information

The top of the COA identifies the product being tested, including the product name, lot number, and testing date.

Why it matters: The lot number on your package should match the lot number on the COA. This ensures the report applies to the exact batch you purchased.

2. Kavalactone Potency

For kava products, one of the most important sections is the kavalactone analysis. Kavalactones are the naturally occurring compounds that make kava unique.

Why it matters: Products should clearly state their verified kavalactone content, not simply the amount of kava extract or root powder used. Two products may contain the same amount of extract but deliver very different levels of kavalactones.

At Primo Kava, we focus on Verified Kavalactones, so you know exactly what you're getting in every serving.

3. Identity Testing

Identity testing confirms that the ingredients in the product are exactly what the label claims.

Why it matters: This testing helps protect consumers from ingredient substitution, adulteration, or mislabeling.

4. Heavy Metal Testing

Independent laboratories screen for contaminants such as:

  • Lead
  • Arsenic
  • Cadmium
  • Mercury

Why it matters: Reputable supplement companies test for heavy metals to ensure products meet established safety standards.

5. Microbial Testing

Microbial testing screens for unwanted organisms, including:

  • Salmonella
  • E. coli
  • Yeast and mold
  • Total aerobic bacteria

Why it matters: These tests help verify that products are manufactured and handled safely.

6. Pass/Fail Specifications

Most COAs include specifications and results for each test performed.

  • Pass means the product met the laboratory's acceptance criteria.
  • Fail means the product did not meet specifications.

Quality companies only release products that pass all required testing.

Questions to Ask When Reviewing Any COA

✔ Is the report from an independent, accredited laboratory?
✔ Does the lot number match the product you're purchasing?
✔ Does the COA verify potency, not just ingredient weight?
✔ Does it include contaminant testing?
✔ Is the company willing to share its testing results?
